# save

Save an entity inside a transaction or not. You can optionally flush the session also.

When `eventHandling` is enabled, the service announces the `ORMPreSave` and `ORMPostSave` interception points around the save.

{% hint style="info" %}
Transactions ride the BoxLang `transaction{}` connection: if a transaction is already active, the save joins it and is committed or rolled back with it (together with any native `queryExecute()` calls). Otherwise, with `transactional = true`, the service opens its own `transaction{}` around the save.
{% endhint %}

## Returns

* This function returns the saved entity

## Arguments

| Key           | Type    | Required | Default           | Description                                                                    |
| ------------- | ------- | -------- | ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| entity        | any     | Yes      | ---               | The entity to save                                                             |
| forceInsert | boolean | No | false | Insert as new record whether it already exists or not |
| flush | boolean | No | false | Do a flush after saving the entity, false by default since we use transactions |
| transactional | boolean | No       | `useTransactions` | Wrap the save in a BoxLang `transaction{}`                                     |

## Examples

```javascript
var user = ormService.new("User");
populateModel(user);
ormService.save(user);
// Save with immediate flush
var user = ormService.new( entityName="User", properties={ lastName : "Majano" } );
ormService.save( entity=user, flush=true );
// save() returns the entity so you can chain
var memento = ormService.save( user ).getMemento();
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://coldbox-orm.ortusbooks.com/v5.x/base-orm-service/service-methods/saving-entities/save.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
