# findWhere

Find one entity (or `null` if not found) according to a criteria structure. Ex: `findWhere( "Category", { category : "Training" } )`, `findWhere( "User", { age : 40, retired : false } )`

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Changed in cborm 6**: more than one match raises an `orm.query.nonUnique` error, with or without query caching. Pass `{ uniqueFirst : true }` as `options` to take the first match instead.
{% endhint %}

## Returns

* This function returns *any*: the entity or `null`

## Arguments

| Key        | Type   | Required | Default | Description                                                                                                                  |
| ---------- | ------ | -------- | ------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| entityName | string | Yes      | ---     | The entity to search                                                                                                         |
| criteria | struct | No | `{}` | A structure of property values to filter on. A `null` value matches `is null`, and each key must be a property of the entity |
| options    | struct | No       | `{}`    | More `bx-orm` `entityLoad()` options, e.g. `{ uniqueFirst : true, readOnly : true }`                                         |

## Examples

```javascript
// Find a category according to the named value pairs I pass into this method
var category = ormService.findWhere( entityName = "Category", criteria = { isActive : true, label : "Training" } );
var user     = ormService.findWhere( entityName = "User", criteria = { isActive : true, username : rc.username } );
// The first match when several can match
var newest = ormService.findWhere( "Post", { author : "Luis Majano" }, { uniqueFirst : true } );
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://coldbox-orm.ortusbooks.com/v5.x/base-orm-service/service-methods/finders/findwhere.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
